A safe, supportive, and structured learning environment for younger learners

Edskills Language School mainly provides English classes for adults who are 18 or older. However, we do welcome students who are aged 16 and above to study in language classes with adult students.

Care and Support for Under-18s

At Birmingham School of English, we mainly offer English classes for adults aged 18 and over. We do not accept students under 16 and do not provide 24-hour supervision. However, we welcome 16 and 17-year-olds to study in adult classes in a safe and supportive environment.

In the UK, anyone under 18 is legally classed as a child, regardless of maturity in their home country.

We are committed to creating a caring, protective environment for all students. All staff undergo strict suitability checks to safeguard under-18s.

From the moment your child arrives, their welfare is our top priority.

Safeguarding and Student Welfare

We recognise that under-18s need extra care to ensure their safety while also respecting the greater independence of 16 and 17-year-olds.

Students will study and socialise in an adult environment both inside and outside of class.

Safeguard the welfare of all students
✔ Identify when additional support is needed
✔ Provide information to help students stay safe
✔ Act promptly if any issues arise

We expect all staff and volunteers to share our commitment to safeguarding.

Accommodation for Under-18s

We carefully select homestay accommodation to create a safe and welcoming “home away from home” for your child.

Our process includes:

  • House inspections

  • Host reference checks

  • Background checks

  • Host training and support

Accommodation Rules:

  • A maximum of four students per homestay.

  • Boys and girls are not placed in the same homestay unless written permission is provided (e.g., siblings or cousins).

  • Students must respect house rules, including safety measures like not cooking unsupervised.

  • A curfew is in place for under-18s. Homestay hosts will contact the school’s emergency number if a student misses curfew or cannot be reached.

  • If a student wishes to stay overnight elsewhere (e.g., with a friend or relative), written parental consent is required along with the new contact details.

Travel Information

Upon arrival, the homestay host will show your child the route to school, typically less than 30 minutes by walking or bus.

After the first day, students travel independently.

Airport Transfers:

If you book an airport transfer, students will travel unaccompanied unless you specifically request a chaperone service.

Supervision and Welfare at School

While on the school premises:

  • The Welfare Team is available to support students.

  • Students receive an emergency contact card and handbook.

  • Staff suitability is rigorously checked.

  • Staff receive safeguarding training.

  • Students are taught what is acceptable behaviour and how to seek help if needed.

Please Note:

Students are not supervised on their daily commute between school and their homestay accommodation.

Students must check in with the school each morning and with their host each evening.

16 and 17-Year-Olds on Adult Courses

Students aged 16 and 17 study alongside adults aged 18+.

Adult students are informed of the presence of minors and are required to sign a Code of Conduct outlining appropriate behaviour with under-18s.

Safety and Security Measures

To maintain a safe environment, the school features:

  • First-aid trained staff

  • Fire safety precautions

  • CCTV cameras

  • Coded front-door access

  • Internet safety filters

  • A dedicated Welfare Officer is available during school hours

Important Documents and Policies

  • Parental Consent Forms (including independent travel consent and medical information)

  • Safeguarding Policy (available on request)

  • 24-Hour Emergency Contact Number:

    (+44) (0)121 690 3354

Students and their parents/guardians must also provide the school with a 24-hour emergency contact number and next-of-kin details (based in the UK if possible).
